In an interview with Euronews, the EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrews Kubilius outlined the priorities for Europe’s role in the war in Ukraine. He stressed the need for the EU to develop an independent peace strategy that is independent of US political processes.

This approach involves changes in the economic and defence sectors, including a significant increase in investment in the defence industry. The aim is to provide long-term guarantees to Kiev and counter Russia’s resource-draining tactics. The aim is for the EU to reduce its dependence on Washington and take greater responsibility for the continent’s security.

The proposal signals a shift in European security policy, and it remains to be seen whether member states will reach a consensus on its implementation.
